How to Choose the Perfect Cooling System

Every PC build needs a proper cooling system to run. Your gaming PC’s cooling system is designed to lessen the heat radiating from the processing components. Its cooling components work on dissipating the accumulated heat energy and allowing it to flow away from the main hardware components to prevent any damage caused by the heat.

Main Types of CPU Coolers

A PC cooling system consists of different components. You need to make several choices to pick up the right cooling system. First, buyers need to decide whether to choose an air cooler or a liquid cooler for their gaming PC. Secondly, you also need a cooling paste to apply to your processor to complete the setup. You can either choose a silicone-based thermal paste or a carbon-based paste.

A CPU cooler can also come in different sizes and speeds. The exact build of your cooling system also depends on whether you have an Intel or AMD CPU system. Some coolers are optimized with CPU socket sizes that will fit perfectly whether you have an Intel or AMD CPU.

Air Cooler

Air coolers are built that are ideal for general PC users. They are affordable, and there are aftermarket air coolers that you can use to replace stock air coolers. However, air coolers are not typically small. This means that there are radiators that may not sit comfortably in your PC case.

Below are three types of air-cooling systems in the market:

Twin Tower Air Coolers

Twin Tower Air Coolers are the most commonly used cooler. They are designed with a vertical stack of heat pins arranged parallel to the heating base.

These air fans are also called U-Type Air Coolers due to their U-shaped heat pipes. These units are installed with the lower half of the heat pipe set in the heating base. With this design, the heat is dually dissipated through its heat pipes.

C-Type Air Coolers

This air cooling system is designed as a top-down air cooler with c-shaped heat pipes that curve from the heat fin stacks. These heat fin stacks are connected to one end of the heating base. This allows the fan to be installed either at the top or the bottom of the heat fins. 

This air cooling system has a design that allows multiple fans to be installed on your gaming PC. Most C-Type Air Coolers can fit a variety of CPUs since they have 120mm and 140mm designs.

But when using C-Type Air Coolers, you must know that its thickness and its added fans will determine the airflow quality in your unit.

Simple Air Cooler

While the former two air coolers are commonly used in gaming PCs, a simple low-profile air-cooler will work for a simple build. This type of air cooler also works for users building a computer with a case that doesn’t have enough space.

Liquid Coolers

Compared to air coolers, liquid-based CPU coolers are generally more effective in controlling the temperature of your gaming PC and its processor. Liquid coolers are the most recommended for high-end gaming PC builds. So if you are only going to develop a low-end gaming setup, you could simply get an aftermarket air cooler.

Liquid coolers also have lower RPMs, which are quieter than air coolers,  because heat is passed through a liquid that never leads your PC build. The construction of liquid coolers is also versatile. That is why the most advanced GPU cooling setup often uses liquid coolers.

Since liquid coolers come in various sizes, they are easy to integrate into any PC system build. However, you must also consider that this cooling system uses water, which can be a potential hazard to the electric components of your gaming PC.

If you use a liquid cooler for your build, you need to ensure that it won’t have any leaks. To prevent this from happening, you can minimize the number of operating components. You can also keep all the internal processes centralized away from the liquid cooling system.

Installation of Liquid Coolers

When installing liquid coolers on your gaming PC build, you can choose to buy a closed-loop or install a DIY. A closed-loop liquid cooling system is factory assembled. This means that upon ordering and receiving them, all you have to do is to install them in your unit, and they are good to go.

You can also choose a custom-built liquid cooling system. These builds are more flexible when it comes to the needs of your gaming PC. Their parts can be arranged, combining different materials, shapes, and sizes.


Suppose you are planning to build an advanced gaming PC. In that case, we definitely recommend that you opt for a liquid-based cooling system. This will ensure that no matter how long you play the unit and how advanced the games you are playing, your unit will not overheat. But if you’re just building a mid-class or low-end gaming PC, buying an air-based fan system will work just fine.
