With Bethesda Software finally showing the teaser to the newest addition to the series, Fallout 76, we couldn’t help but reminisce. Fallout happens to be one of the most popular gaming franchise and has spawned many games throughout the years, with the latest being Fallout 4. With that said, we decided to list them down based on our preference, with the last being our most favorite.
Are our choices same as yours? Let’s find out:
Fallout is the series’ first game which was developed and published by Interplay Productions in 1997. It was described as a post-nuclear role-playing game, introducing players to a post-apocalyptic and retro-futuristic setting. The protagonist of the game is tasked to save their vault by exploring the Wasteland and finding a replacement Water Chip.
The game back then was considered the spiritual successor to the 1988 video game Wasteland and was loved by many. It became one of the best-selling computer games in 1977 and was critically acclaimed for its plot and gameplay.
Fallout 3 came out in 2008 and was the third major installment in the Fallout series. It marks the first significant shift in the series with the developers using 3D graphics and real-time combat, replacing its predecessor’s 2D isometric graphics and its turn-based combat.
The game features an open-world environment set in the ruins of Washington D.C. which is referred to as the Capital Wasteland. It was set during the year 2277, around 36 years later after the events of Fallout 2. The player takes control of an inhabitant of Vault 101, who is forced to journey out into the Capital Wasteland to find his father after he disappears from the vault under mysterious circumstances.
Fallout 4 is the series fifth major installment which was released in November 2015 for PlayStation 4, XBox One, and Microsoft Windows PCs and gaming laptops. It was praised by the critics for its thought-provoking narrative, exciting content, and the freedom it gives to the players. It was also praised for its larger world and its vastly improved combat system.
The game takes the role of the sole survivor who wakes up after a long-term cryogenic stasis in Vault 111. After witnessing the murder of his/her spouse and unknown strangers kidnapping their son, the Sole Survivor ventures out on a journey to search for his/her missing child in a dilapidated world, filled in with strangers and mutated creatures.
Fallout 2 was developed by Black Isle Studios and was published by Interplay Productions. Similar to its predecessor, the game uses the same graphics and game mechanics. But it features a larger game world and a more extensive storyline.
The game takes place in 2241, which is 80 years after the events of the first game. It tells the story of the original hero’s descendant and his journey on saving their primitive tribe from starvation. To do this, he must find an ancient environmental restoration machine which is known as the Garden of Eden Creation Kit or GECK.
Fallout: New Vegas
Every fan of Fallout will agree that Fallout: New Vegas is the best game in the series. It is the fourth major installment and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. This game received favorable reviews from critics and was praised for its gameplay improvements and its risk of expanding the content over Fallout 3. The game was a commercial success, shipping more than 12 million copies worldwide.
It follows the story of a man known as the Courier who must transport an important package across the Mojave Desert to the city of New Vegas. He is then ambushed and was robbed of the package, and was shot. After surviving, the Courier begins a journey in finding the criminal and recovering the package, ultimately learning that he was caught up in a conflict that will determine who will control New Vegas.
