Left 4 Dead 2 is one of, if not, the best horror-zombie games ever created. It was released in November 2009 and has won several awards. Since Halloween is near, I decided to play it again to relive some of the scariest moments I have experienced. Let me share the best of them:
Opening the door of the Church’s safe house only to find a hunter waiting for you.
Hunters are Special Infected known for pouncing toward Survivors. After this zombie pins you down, he will spend his time clawing on your body until you helplessly die. They are so agile that they can take you by surprise. One of the most notable Hunters you can encounter in the game is the one hiding inside the safe house of the Church in the Death Toll campaign. This one is sure to give you a heart attack. Who would expect a special infected zombie inside a safe house of all places?
When you hear the freaking Witch crying.
The only Special Infected zombie in the game that can instantly kill you or incapacitate you, there is nothing more frightening than encountering the Witch. So don’t ask me why everyone starts freaking out whenever there is a sound of a woman crying nearby because that is one sure way to tell that a Witch is nearby.
Running for your life after you startled the Witch.
Shining a flashlight on a Witch, approaching her will cause her to attack you at great speed. Oh, and did I mention that the Witch can run faster than Survivors. So if you happen to startle a Witch, the only thing you can do is to pray that your teammates can kill her before she has a chance to get near you, because if she did then game over, dude.
Trying to Survive the Hard Rain Campaign.
The Hard Rain Campaign takes place after the Swamp Fever. In this campaign, you have to survive and go through the Witch-infested ruins of the Ducatel Sugar Mill to get some fuel from the Ducatel Diesel Station. And that’s not the hardest part yet, once you have the diesel, a hurricane will arrive, and the whole area will be flooded. Rain will reduce your visibility while the squalls of the wind will make it harder for you to hear your surroundings. Honestly, this isn’t the most exciting campaign to play.
Stuck in the Cornfield of Death, fighting a horde of zombies.
The Cornfield is a place you can find in the FarmHouse Finale chapter of the Blood Harvest campaign. Also known as the Cornfield of Death by avid fans, it is one of the freakiest places to be stuck when a horde of zombies starts coming. It’s hard to see things in the middle of this cornfield, and you can easily get lost. Zombies can attack you from all places, and you can end up dead before you know it.
The mere presence of the Tank.
Arguably the most powerful Special Infected zombie in Left 4 Dead universe, the Tank can easily kill your whole team single-handedly. Despite his large size, the Tank is incredibly fast and can easily keep up with a healthy Survivor. The Tank is also the hardest zombie to kill and can survive from immense damage. That’s why the best thing you can do when you see one is to throw a Molotov on it and run as fast as you can.
Wandering around The Ducatel Sugar Mill with all the witches present in the place.
One of the scary places in the game is The Ducatel Sugar Mill, otherwise known as the spawning site of the Witches. Compare to other map sites; the Ducatel Sugar Mill is where you’ll find several Witches because the smell of sugar attracts them. Actually, according to online polls, the Sugar Mill is considered as one of the hardest levels in the game.
And lastly, being left behind by your teammate.
Last but not the least; you won’t like to be left alone as a horde of zombies suddenly arrives. If it’s hard to survive with friends, then it’s harder to survive alone. Just imagine hundreds of zombies coming your way with a dozen of Special Infected ones such as a Tank or a Charger. That’s when you’ll know what real terror is.
