5 MOBA Games Similar to DotA 2 and League of Legends

DotA 2 and League of Legends has been by far the most famous games online. These two games have one thing in common: they are both MOBA or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games. MOBA games are also known as action real-time strategy and require each player to take control of a playable character, each with their unique set of skills.

Smite

Smite is an online battleground for the Old gods and goddesses. From Romans, Greek, Egyptian to Aztec mythology, this free-to-play MOBA game allows you to control one ancient god that has a unique set of abilities to help you win the war. The game brings you directly into action by giving you the same point-of-view as your chosen god. Play as Zeus, Thor, Anubis, Hades, Amaterasu, or Thanatos in this ancient MOBA game that will let you wage war in the name of glory and conquest.

Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm is a popular MOBA game from Blizzard Entertainment for OS X and Microsoft Windows gaming desktops and laptops. What makes an exciting game to play is that it features characters from other Blizzard’s franchises such as Overwatch, Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft, and The Lost Vikings. Blizzard preferred to call it as an online brawler game than just putting it into the category of multiplayer online battle arena games.

Strife

Strife is a new MOBA game developed by S2 Games that was just released 2015. Its developers aimed to present the game for more casual players, featuring gameplay elements that focus on reducing toxicity in its community. It also introduces unique mechanics outside the arena including pets and crafting. Like other MOBA games, Strife pits two teams of players against each other with the goal of destroying the central structure of your opponent called “Crux.”

Heroes of Newerth

Heroes of Newerth is another MOBA game from S2 Games, the creator of Strife. The game was heavily inspired by Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. HoN pits two teams of players against each other: the Legion and the Hellbourne. The primary goal is to destroy the Legion’s World Tree or Hellbourne Sacrificial Shrine, depending on which team you are. The game is now acquired by Frostburn Studios.

Paragon

Paragon is currently in its Open Beta state and is being developed by Epic Games. Its gameplay features a third-person shooter, each of the in-game characters possessing mobility skills. According to its creative director, the maps have a bowl shape design so the players can quickly check the map. Its visual graphics are great and offers something new for long-time MOBA players. The game is also available on PlayStation 4 and offers a cross-platform play between PC.
